“caballo de guerra” – Work in Progress

I’ve been spending a lot of time trying to really free up my approach to fine art, my freedom of line-work, strokes and color. Because of my digital design background I have a real tendency to sometimes confine myself, by mathematic precision and the desire for perfection.

In my newest piece “caballo de guerra” (Horse of War), I’m really trying to break out of some self imposed constraints, I’ve begun utilizing an “old world” color palette, and laying down oil pastel color strokes quickly and sometimes rather rudimentary.

Dream of dark horses – “sueño de caballos oscuros”

"sueño de caballos oscuros"

I recently completed a digital sketch for an upcoming project I’ll be working on. All who follow my work know how much I’m influenced by multi-cultured folk art styles, well my newest project will reflect more elements using these approaches. I’m moving towards a bit of an “old world” color palette on this piece (this seems to be a bit of a current trend in decorative art), and keeping with very simplistic, yet bold imagery.

The digital sketch will just be used as a basic template, so I’m assuming once it is placed onto canvas and the painting process begins that similarities between the finished images will be very remote.

“13 Lines Beneath A Lone Star” Alamo Illustration Completed

"13 Lines Beneath A Lone Star"

I was recently commissioned by poet Robert Durney to illustrate his historically based poem “13 Lines Beneath A Lone Star”, based on the 1836 Battle of the Alamo. I decided to create this piece digitally (for the purposes of reproduction) while drawing from elements of vintage children’s book illustrations, period pen and ink sketches, and even some older Disney styles. I will be updating the post with purchase information as soon as these prints are available through the author or publisher. Enjoy.

“As the Crow Flies” Painting Featured in R Pela “Klown!” Exhibit

I had a pretty good write up by the Arizona Republic about the upcoming R. Pela Contemporary Gallery “Klown!” Exhibit. My painting “As the Crow Flies” will be one of the many paintings and sculptures showcased by a group of very talented artists. We’re expecting a good turn-out so support local artists, come down and see the artwork in person!

“Riders” – Old West Illustration

"Riders"
I’m currently working on a series of pastel pieces that will showcase the Arizona Centennial, images related to Arizona’s history and diverse cultural backgrounds that helped shape Arizona and make it the state that it is today. The first piece is a glimpse back in history, it’s called “Riders”.

This piece is 18″ X 24″, Pastel on Mi Tiente textured paper, and available for purchase.

“The Sharp End” Book Cover Painting Completed

Finally completed, my most recent project, take a sneak peek at the cover artwork for “The Sharp End” from “The Great Undead War” book series, by internationally bestselling author Joe Nassise.

Here’s the series breakdown…

An alternate history zombie novel set during World War I that blends the take-no-prisoners heroic grit of Inglorious Basterds with the irreverent inventiveness of Dawn of the Dead…

… in all its steampunk glory.
